Ruroc Collaborates with Taylor Mackenzie

Ruroc, a prestigious helmet manufacturer based in Gloucestershire, has embarked on a mission to revolutionize the racetrack experience by crafting an upgraded track-focused helmet, Atlas 4.0 Track, which outperforms its predecessor in terms of lightness and aerodynamics.
Balancing a competitive edge and daily-use comfort, the new Atlas 4.0 Track complies with both ECE 22.06 and ACU Gold safety standards. Crafted from carbon fibre, the new helmet model is approximately 15% lighter than the road-biased Atlas 4.0, thanks to a strategic reduction in the overall weight of the linings and fasteners.
Tom Savage, Ruroc’s Head of Design and Engineering, clarified how the weight reduction wasn’t achieved through material cuts but by meticulous lab testing and analysis. “We intensively study the factors that contribute to the composite’s weight. We conduct varied penetration tests and observe how the composite holds up against a sharp penetrating anvil, akin to the DOT test,” Savage explained.
This innovative process commences with 2D sketches before progressing to 3D VR technology-assisted data analysis. Ruroc asserts that this technology allows them to examine multiple versions in the time traditionally used to produce one using standard CAD.
Jason Esson, Industrial Designer at Ruroc, stated, “Through VR, we can build 3D data and perform four to six iterations in the time it would take with traditional CAD processes. This accelerates our ability to create these parts, 3D print them, and test them in a wind tunnel or on the track.”
However, Esson acknowledged that while the lightweight design is beneficial, it doesn’t necessarily enhance the helmet’s aerodynamics. Therefore, during the 18-month R&D process, improving the helmet’s ability to cut through wind was a primary concern.
Esson explained, “We didn’t want to make superficial modifications and label it a ‘track helmet.’ Our goal was to enhance every possible aspect, and aerodynamics was a significant part of that endeavour.”
Former British Superstock Champion, Taylor Mackenzie, was involved in rigorous real-world testing, executing hundreds of high-speed laps at Pembrey in Wales. “After riding thousands of laps at high speed, I was intimately aware of the helmet’s strengths and weaknesses,” Mackenzie said. “I was honoured to participate in various stages of the process, from refining the aero performance parts during high-speed tests to being part of acoustic and thermal testing procedures.”
Rigorous thermal analysis was carried out during the testing with Mackenzie at Pembrey. This involved equipping him with a thermal couple-fitted balaclava, and testing the helmet’s thermal efficiency by alternating vent openings while riding. Streamlined Aesthetics: The Atlas Track’s air-cutting design is thanks to a new top visor seal, side vents, and rear spoiler. Designer Jason Esson said they developed an array of combinations of spoilers, vents, and seals to find the optimal design. Safety Focus: Energy-absorbing Rheon material is utilized for safety enhancement. Ruroc managed to strike a balance between weight reduction and safety, resulting in a lighter helmet that also offers improved protection against rotational forces causing many brain injuries.
The interior of the Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Track also underwent a facelift, with improvements that did not compromise on comfort while maintaining the competitive edge necessary for a track helmet. The helmet features a plush liner designed for enhanced comfort and fit, even during extended use on and off the track.
In addition to optimizing physical features, Ruroc leaned into advanced technology to take the Atlas 4.0 Track helmet to the next level. They used sophisticated wind-tunnel testing to refine the helmet’s aerodynamic performance, proving their commitment to pushing the boundaries in helmet design.
Taylor Mackenzie’s experience played a crucial role in the development of the Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Track. His professional insights, paired with hundreds of high-speed laps, brought invaluable data to the design table, contributing to the fine-tuning of the helmet’s overall performance and design.
Mackenzie noted, “The experience was incredibly enlightening. Testing the helmet at high speeds helped me recognize the nuances of its performance. I felt privileged to contribute to the refinement of the aero performance parts and to participate in acoustic and thermal testing.”
Ruroc’s approach of combining technology, expert feedback, and rigorous testing underscores their commitment to creating an exceptional product. The Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Track reflects the company’s focus on continual evolution and the integration of user feedback into their development process.
The company looks forward to seeing the new Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Track helmet being used by both professional racers and everyday riders alike. Emphasizing safety, aerodynamics, and comfort, Ruroc has created a versatile helmet ready for both the race circuit and the open road.
In conclusion, with the Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Track, riders can enjoy a product that’s as meticulously designed as their motorcycles. No stone was left unturned in its development process, making the new Atlas 4.0 Track a ground-breaking addition to Ruroc’s prestigious lineup. It’s a helmet that truly embodies Ruroc’s ethos: uncompromising quality, innovative design, and relentless pursuit of perfection.
The Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Track helmet, now available in various colours, is priced starting at £550.
